Centaurea cyanus One of the most popular cottage wildflowers, these crimson blossoms are bright as a button and bring lots of cheer! Very easy to grow from seed and a self-seeding annual, so there's little need to replant. Bachelor's Buttons were brought to America in the 17th century. A vigorous species, drought resistant, with a wide-ranging adaptability. You can grow this! Growing NotesSow outdoors just before the last frost or shortly after. Plant seeds just beneath the surface of the soil. Germination 7-14 days. Or start indoors 4-6 weeks before planting date, planting outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked. Prefers full sun, cool temperatures, well-drained average soils, and moderate water. Tends to sprawl without some support and are easily flattened by wind. Blooms early to mid-season and blooms throughout the summer. Height 12-24". Zones 3-10. NOTE: This species is considered invasive in some states in the southeastern United States.
